The first Group race opportunity of the season for promising fillies over 6f, frequently producing a prospect for the following year’s 1,000 Guineas. Last year’s winner, Venetian Sun, is the likely favourite for the G1 Commonwealth Cup, the next race on the card.

Wathnan has two candidates for the race. Light Of Dawn made her racecourse debut at Carlisle just 11 days ago, having been bought in Deauville early in May. Ridden with great confidence, the Karl Burke trainee was, said jockey James Doyle, ‘Very relaxed in the race – but she has shown a tendency to flick her head up in the air.’ Her trainer had noted that she has plenty of scope, and ‘won’t just be a whizz-bang juvenile’.

She is likely to be joined by Hidden Gift, who was placed on her only start to date. She showed a lot of inexperience that day and, in the circumstances, did very well indeed to finish second, beaten only half a length. Her trainers, father-and-son Richard and Peter Fahey, are sure she will have learnt from the experience.
