Wathnan hasn’t enjoyed much luck in this race, often likened to a cavalry charge, with 28 runners haring up the straight mile: Silawi was nearly last in this just a few short months before his G1 win in Canada. Archivist, also from the Hamad Al-Jehani stable, was backed into favouritism by the Ascot masses but never looked likely to collect, perhaps finding the hullaballoo of the big day more than he could cope with. He’s a talented horse, coincidentally by the same sire as Silawi, and perhaps his next few months might be as rewarding as Silawi’s were after this race last year. The winner, Rogue Diplomat, pounced late and zipped up the nearside rail.
