So much about a race like this comes down to the luck of the draw: being near to other good horses, proximate to the pace. Just ask retained jockey James Doyle: two years ago, he and Wathnan Racing’s Native Warrior flew home from a high-numbered starting stall to win the race on the stands side. However, the field had split into three and they found themselves on the wrong side... and only third overall.

With three likely Wathnan runners today, perhaps one of them will be drawn well, get the luck in running, be in the right place at the right time. Organise, the progressive winner of two of his first three starts for trainers John and Thady Gosden, returns to the racecourse after a recent gelding operation. He’s joined by Exclusive Code, hero of a 25-runner maiden at Newbury for trainer Archie Watson on his most recent start, and New Connection, also a winner from three starts in France for trainer Francis-Henri Graffard.
